System Inactivates Pathogens in Platelets and Plasma

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 14 Dec 2006
A blood system reduces the risk of transfusion-transmitted diseases by inactivating a broad range of pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, and parasites that may be present in donated blood intended for transfusion. More...
The system inactivates the pathogens in both plasma and platelets using the same illumination device, process, and active compound.

The Intercept plasma system was designed to meet blood center requirements for efficiency, performance, and compatibility with both whole blood and apheresis collections. The efficacy and safety of the plasma system was valuated in approximately 5,000 transfusions.

A product of Cerus Corporation (Concord, CA, USA), the Intercept blood system has received a CE mark, which allows the system to be marketed throughout the European Union. Cerus has also received the International Organization of Standardization (ISO) 13485 certification, allowing Cerus to sell the Intercept blood system for platelets and plasma under its own label.

"Approval of the plasma system in Europe represents a very important milestone for the company. We are excited to add a second commercial product to our Intercept blood system product family. This marks the first regulatory approval for Cerus in our name only,” said Claes Glassell, president and CEO of Cerus Corporation. "Our European customers can now use treatment systems for both platelets and plasma that rely on the same instrument for processing. This is a compelling operational benefit to blood centers.”

Cerus Corporation is a biopharmaceutical company that develops and commercializes novel, proprietary products in the fields of blood safety and immunotherapy to provide safer, more effective medical options to patients in areas of substantial unmet medical needs.
