Innovative Adapter Takes the Stress out of Endoscopic Examinations

The Weinmann Endoscope Adapter is a nonvented (NV) adapter, which negates the need to interrupt ventilation for an endoscopic examination of the patient, maintaining access to the patient safe and leakage-free. Medical personnel can treat the patient without any time pressure, since the adapter can even be replaced during ventilation, by simply replacing the elbow on the mask with adapter and then guiding the endoscope (or a bronchoscope) through the opening. There is no need to refit the mask after endoscopic examination.

The endoscope adapter is placed by simply twisting it clockwise until it clicks into position. The adapter allows both a nasal or oral endoscopic examination to be conducted, and can accommodate endoscopic instruments with two different diameters (3.5-5 mm and 5-6.5 mm). The Weinmann Endoscope Adapter is a product of Weinmann (Hamburg, Germany), and is suitable for use with the proprietary Joyce Full Face NV 40 hPa mask, the Joyce Full Face GEL NV mask, and the and Joyce SilkGel Full Face NV mask.

Currently, an endoscopic examination of mechanically ventilated patients is stressful for both the patient and medical personnel, since the mask needed to be removed and replaced, and ventilation is temporarily interrupted. As a result, the level of oxygen saturation (SpO2) in the blood may decrease, and if the patient is unable to exhale sufficient amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2), an interruption in ventilation could raise the CO2 level in the blood and cause the patient to lose consciousness.
