"Electroceutical” Treatment Alleviates Pain

A noninvasive therapy system targets and enhances the body's anti-inflammatory and angiogenic responses, relieving osteoarthritic (OA) and other pain.

The Ivivi SofPulse Targeted Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (tPEMF) therapy system works by creating a therapeutic electrical current in injured soft tissue, which modulates biochemical and physiological healing processes to help repair the injured tissue and reduce related pain and inflammation, as well as accelerate the body's natural healing process. The PEMF field works through clothing, dressings, or even plaster casts. The system consists of a power supply and a range of applicators, from an older (but effective) 3-pound "pancake” applicator to lightweight coils. The selected applicator head is swung into position, lightly resting against the affected area (direct contact is not required); a button is then pushed and treatment begins, lasting 30 minutes. Treatments are generally given twice or three times a day, as indicated by the healthcare professional. The Ivivi SofPulse therapy system is a product of Ivivi Technologies (Northvale, NJ, USA), and has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

"Our proprietary tPEMF technology works by targeting the anti-inflammatory pathway in the body to help manage pain,” said Steven Gluckstern, chairman, president, and CEO Ivivi. "Positive benefits have been demonstrated in animal and human clinical studies for the treatment of chronic wounds and the reduction of pain and swelling after surgical procedures.”

Clinical evidence from studies with the system suggests that the targeted PEMF therapy may have physiologically significant effects on tissue growth and repair. Edema is reduced by re-activating the flow of electrolytes across intracellular components, reducing interstitial fluid build-up, and reducing swelling. The pulse also promotes healing through acceleration of normal growth factor hormone production.
