New Workstation Aids Pathologists

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 23 Oct 2001
A new Pathology Workstation allows pathologists to automatically cut out and retrieve cells of interest from a biopsy for DNA and RNA analysis to provide a definitive cancer diagnosis. More...
The workstation was introduced at the annual meeting of the American Society for Clinical Pathologists in Philadelphia (PA, USA).

The Pathology Workstation is a special configuration of the new, more broad-based Imaging Workstation, both from Cell Robotics International (Albuquerque, NM, USA). The Imaging Workstation uses LaserTweezers and LaserScissors for research in stem cells, transgenic animal production, and functional genomics. This workstation can also support research related to terrorism, allowing pathologists to remotely examine, isolate, and identify a single bacterium, including pathogens such as anthrax, smallpox, and botulism.

"The Pathology Workstation is designed to provide pathologists with new tools for the retrieval of specific cells to allow molecular analysis of biopsies,” said Dr. Jerome Conia, chief scientists at Cell Robotics. "Once the specimen of interest is identified by the pathologist, the laser automatically cuts around it using the new auto-cut software.”
