Innovative Tool Creates Models from Imaging Data

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 19 Feb 2019
A new image segmentation system transfers imaging information from a medical scanner to an output file for simulating and evaluating surgical treatment options.

The Synopsys (Mountain View, CA, USA) Simpleware ScanIP Medical software is designed to enable the conversion of three-dimensional (3D) data from a computerized tomography (CT) scanner or a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner into high-quality computer models that can used for engineering design and pre-operative simulation, using powerful image visualization, analysis, segmentation, and quantification tools. More...
Features include smooth interpolation, a mask ungroup tool to automate difficult segmentation tasks, complex image data segmentation using 3D wrap tools, one-click fill gaps tool, and 3D editing enhancements.

Simpleware ScanIP is also easy-to-learn and use, and includes video recording features, comprehensive measurements and statistics tools, and options to export surface models and meshes from segmented data for 3D printing. Other modules are available for exporting meshes, integrating image data and computer-aided design (CAD), exporting non-uniform rational basis spline (NURBS) models, calculating effective material properties from scans, volume rendering of background images and masks, and topology preserving smoothing.

“ScanIP Medical shows great potential for expanding Synopsys' role in software applications for the medical simulation and pre-surgical planning market across the United States and Europe,” said Terry Ma, vice president of engineering for TCAD at Synopsys. “Together with ISO certification, it further enhances Synopsys' ability to provide high-quality medical software that can consistently meet customer needs and applicable regulatory requirements.”
