New Technology for Isolating Pure RNA

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 13 Mar 2006
A simple effective technology for isolating pure RNA from blood, animal tissue, or cultured cells has been developed. More...
The resultant RNA is essentially free of genomic DNA, protein, and other enzymatic inhibitors

Convenient, easy-to-use kits contain pre-mixed reagents, and samples can be processed at room temperature on the lab bench without a fume hood. There are no harsh organic solvents, foul-smelling agents, or reactive organic salts, eliminating the need for hazardous waste disposal. The sample preparation failure rate approaches zero, a great advantage for researchers working with precious samples.

Gentra (Minneapolis, MN, USA) introduced the new Versagene RNA purification system for Tempus blood collection tubes, which are produced by Applied Biosystems (Foster City, CA, USA). The Versagene chemistry was developed specifically to provide life sciences industries with a reliable and consistent method for obtaining pure RNA and DNA samples across a broad spectrum of sample types. Tempus blood RNA tubes are evacuated blood collection tubes that stabilize large quantities of RNA and expression profiles at room temperature.
The Versegene method, in tandem with Tempus blood collection tubes, provides a superior method for obtaining RNA for use in downstream applications, including RNA microarrays, quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and real-time PCR.

"The Versegene RNA blood kits for Tempus tubes are ideally suited for isolating the high quality RNA required for highly sensitive assays used in the pharmacological and clinical diagnosis industries,” said Stephen Rundlett, Versagene product manager for Gentra. "Researchers can routinely obtain superior RNA yields with higher purity than what is obtained using other blood stabilization products.”

In addition to the Versagene RNA for blood for Tempus tubes kits, Gentra markets Versagene RNA purification kits for whole blood, cultured cells, tissue, and fibrous tissue, as well as DNA purification kits for whole blood and cultured cells.
