Oxygen Monitor Saves Valuable Time for CC Patients

A new continuous monitor of partial pressure oxygen and carbon dioxide (pO2 and pCO2) incorporates automatic calibration, which can save valuable time for critical care patients.

A large color display screen allows users to readily follow trend curves, enabling them to gain an overview of patient progress over time. Two features aid fast and reliable measurements. One is an optical feature that quickly stabilizes transcutaneous values by increasing electrode temperature by one degree during the initial five minutes without compromising patient comfort. The second is an algorithm that improves the stability of measurements so they reflect actual physiologic changes in patient status. Called The TCM 4, the portable monitor is the product of Radiometer Medical A/S (Copenhagen, Denmark).

"Having a monitor that is always calibrated and ready to use means it can be operated as soon as a critically ill patient is brought into the ward, therefore saving valuable time,” said Mads Haugaard, product group manager at Radiometer Medical. The company's website offers a short demonstration as well as information about the continuous monitoring of oxygen and carbon dioxide in neonates and infants.
