Ventilator Allows Spontaneous Breathing Anytime

A new ventilator that enables patients to breathe spontaneously at any time is based on new scientific findings, says the developer.

Clinical studies have demonstrated that relaxed muscles or strong sedation can have a negative influence on the lung function of patients. More...
Reducing sedation and preventing relaxed muscles therefore have a positive effect on respiration and lung function. The key objective is to give patients the freedom to breathe spontaneously at the earliest possible stage. The new ventilator enables patients to do this.

Called EvitaXL, the ventilator was developed by Draeger Medical AG (Lubeck, Germany; www.dragermedical.com). EvitaXL offers a high degree of flexibility and allows one single intensive care unit (ICU) ventilator to treat different kinds of ICU patients: adults, children, or neonates. Because of Draeger's modular system, an Evita 4 can easily be upgraded to the EvitaXL. The new ventilator has a larger and more user-friendly screen and accessible settings that are easier and quicker to operate, so that less training is needed, says the company.
