Nebulizer for Respiratory Patients on Ventilators

A nebulizer designed to improve the efficiency of drug delivery for patients on ventilators is based on new technology that provides fine-particle, low-speed aerosol delivery.

The low speed reduces turbulence in the ventilator tubing, which helps reduce the amount of drug that remains trapped in the circuit. Called Aeroneb Pro, the nebulizer does not increase gas volume or pressure, so it works seamlessly inline with ventilators. This means there is less need to interrupt breathing assistance and less time needed to adjust equipment.

Aeroneb is the product of Aerogen, Inc. (Mountain View, CA, USA). The Aeroneb Pro can also be used off the ventilator with a mouthpiece or a mask to treat respiratory patients anywhere in the hospital. The device is also well suited for treating neonates because less stress is placed on the lungs and the device is nearly silent. Aerogen states that it is the first significant advance in more than 20 years in respiratory drug therapy for hospital patients.

"By reducing drug waste, minimizing the potential for ventilator interference and cutting demands on personnel time, the Aeroneb Pro should help hospitals reduce both staff and drug costs,” said Robert Fishman, M.D., vice president of scientific affairs at Aerogen.
