Connected Dose Inhaler Optimizes Respiratory Care

A novel embedded metered dose inhaler (eMDI) enables improved adherence and real-time monitoring of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) patients.

The connected data also aids real-time monitoring of medication use and symptom flare-ups by caregivers. Sensors within the inhaler track the date and time of medication use as well as the quality of delivery, which is recorded in onboard memory and also shared wirelessly Bluetooth, syncing with the BreatheSmart app.

The BreatheSmart app can thus provide users and caregivers customized reminders, real-time alerts and updates on medication usage, weekly and monthly summary reports which can be shared with family, caregivers and/or healthcare providers, and secure, automatic, realtime electronic medical record (EMR) integration. The medication utilization data from the eMDI can be merged with lung function data from the Cohero Health (New York, NY, USA) mSpirometer, a clinical grade handheld wireless spirometer that precisely measures critical lung function metrics.

Features of the device include embedded sensors to detect medication use and quality of medication administration, an embedded mechanical or electronic dose count and an intuitive and discrete design. Operation is consistent with standard puffer MDI operation, and is compatible with any canister. Battery life is consistent with the product shelf life, meaning that there is no need for replacement parts and no recharging or battery changes. In addition, the device incorporates a mechanical dose counter to allow pharmaceutical companies to transition current products to connected devices more easily.
