New ICD Provides Maximum Energy on First Shock

A novel implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) delivers 42 Joules of ultra-high energy on the first shock.

The Inventra DX System provides dual-chamber diagnostic capabilities information with just one specialized defibrillator lead, reducing the risk associated with additional hardware for patients, while at the same time providing valuable clinical information to the physician. More...
The system utilizes the Linoxsmart DX lead with floating dipole, which provides sophisticated atrial signal processing capabilities, even helping to detect silent atrial fibrillation (AF). Proprietary SMART Detection algorithm and MorphMatch functions can discriminate atrial tachyarrythmias, helping reduce the risk of inappropriate shocks.

The Inventra DX System, a product of BIOTRONIK (Berlin, Germany), was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), together with the Itrevia ICD Series, a less invasive therapy with an algorithm that can identify successful pain-free therapies for each patient, and dynamically re-apply them as needed. The complete Itrevia DX family includes the Itrevia VR-T, the Itrevia DR-T, and the Itrevia HF-T.

“Physician experts in the field of electrophysiology have indicated that meaningful therapeutic innovations available in Itrevia and Inventra ICDs—like high energy options, DX systems, and CLS—make it easier for physicians to tailor therapy and improve the quality of life for their patients,” said Marlou Janssen, president of BIOTRONIK. “This approval is yet another example of BIOTRONIK's ability to offer unique stand-alone technology to support electrophysiologists as they pursue their life-saving, life-changing work for patients.”

“DX systems use single coil leads, and these leads are definitely my preference, because evidence shows lower long-term complication rates,” said James Stone Jr., MD, of Cardiology Associates of North Mississippi (Tupelo, MS, USA). “In rare cases, patients will present with high defibrillation thresholds that require maximum energy. BIOTRONIK's Inventra DX will be a good alternative for these patients.”

ICD’s or pacemakers that pace either the right atrium or the right ventricle are called single-chamber pacemakers. Those that pace both the right atrium and right ventricle of the heart and require two pacing leads are called dual-chamber pacemakers. And those that pace the right atrium and both the right and left ventricles are called biventricular.
