Ventilation Device Facilitates Ambulation for Patients with Respiratory Insufficiency

A novel ventilation system that is used with an existing oxygen supply provides the patient with both augmented ventilation and supplemental oxygen.

The Non-Invasive Open Ventilation (NIOV) system is an easy-to-use, 450 gram ventilator that delivers augmented oxygen (O2) tidal volume and entrained air during a patient’s spontaneous breathing, via a small nasal pillows interface. More...
The system senses the patient’s spontaneous breath through sense ports in the interface, and then delivers the selected volume of oxygen. As the oxygen is delivered, ambient air is entrained through the entrainment ports, and positive pressure is developed within the mask to supplement the patient’s spontaneous breathing, reducing breathing effort, supplementing the volume of air inhaled, and improving oxygen delivery.

The device offers customizable volume settings for three levels of activity, which are easily programmed by the clinician, based on individual patient needs. Password protected clinician menu and settings are set on a liquid crystal diode (LCD) touchscreen display for easy customization and titration. The NIOV System is a product of Breathe Technologies (Irvine, CA, USA), and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
