Cardiostim 2010 to Focus on the Management of Cardiac Arrhythmias

Cardiostim 2010, the 17th world congress on cardiac electrophysiology and cardiac techniques, will focus this year on technologic advances, unveiling new techniques that allow the delivery of more efficacious, more expeditious, and more durable treatments for those who suffer from cardiac rhythm disturbances. The majority of structured programs at the congress will include representative clinical cases to illustrate the presentation. In many sessions, the audience's opinion will be probed by an automatic voting system. Other sessions will strictly be educational, returning from patient records to basic electrophysiology, and from data stored in memory to device functions. Among the topics discussed will be the recent introduction of medical imaging, which is making major contributions to the field of cardiac electrophysiology by promoting the understanding of clinical cases and facilitating the completion of more accurate interventional, antiarrhythmic procedures.

Another field discussed will be magnetic resonance, a technique that enables more precise and more efficacious interventions, allowing the achievement of better results in the management of ventricular rhythm disturbances, with a view to prevent frequent episodes of tachycardia or repetitive shocks delivered to recipients of implantable defibrillators, as well as expedite the performance of atrial fibrillation ablation procedures. In cardiac resynchronization therapy, it enables better visualization of the hearts anatomy, detecting fibrotic tissue and analyzing the dyssynchrony of the heart.

During Cardiostim 2010, the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control (INRIA; Paris, Francer) will present research conducted by its physicists and mathematicians in the field of cardiac physiology, as well as its other projects. The objective will be to show how, using a "digital heart,” one can simulate the function of the heart, understand diseases, and choose treatments. The fields of applications range from cardiac pacing, to defibrillation, to ablation.

Cardiostim 2010 will take place in Nice (France) between June 16 and June 19, 2010; the congress is expected to draw over 5,000 participants.
