Bladder Scanning Device Prevents Unneeded Catheterizations

The portable BladderScan ultrasound instrument is noninvasive, easy to use, and employs patent-pending NeuralHarmonics technology, which improves both the speed and accuracy in bladder volume measurement, and helps achieve differentiation of the bladder, urine, and hypo-echogenic regions (such as the uterus), reducing error and minimizing uncertainty in the measurements of bladder function. A ‘small child' mode is available for the BVI 9400 that enables healthcare providers to measure bladder volume non-invasively on children weighing less than 27 kg and standing less than 120 cm tall with the same instrument used for adult patients. The BladderScan is equipped with a color console, improved aiming, on-board video tutorials, and an array of exam recording options. The BladderScan BVI 9400 is a product of Verathon (Bothell, WA, USA).

The use of urinary catheters in the elderly, people experiencing nervous system disorders, and people who are convalescing or unconscious for long periods may result in an increased risk of urinary tract infection for a variety of reasons. Urinary catheter-related UTIs are estimated to total over 561,000 per year in the United States alone and account for over 40% of all nosocomial infections.
