Wireless Blood Glucose Monitoring Device

The GlucoTel monitoring device is a part of the GlucoTel self-managed telemedical diabetes system. Sugar levels are metered electronically using blood-testing strips that require less than a 1 nl (nanoliter) sample of blood. The results are then transmitted automatically via a Bluetooth protocol connection to the patient's java-enabled mobile phone. The data are then forwarded by short message service (SMS) text messaging or via a general package radio service (GPRS) data packet directly to an Internet database where it is then stored. The system enables the inclusion of the patient in their own treatment, and improves the information basis and communication between doctor and patient. The GlucoTel system is under development by BodyTel Scientific (Bad Wildungen, Germany), and is in the pre-IDE (investigation of device evaluation) phase of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) review process.

"Now that we have completed the manufacturing of the first conforming samples of the GlucoTel meter, we are excited to begin the clinical trials,” said Stefan Schraps,
CEO of BodyTel Scientific. "We are confident we will successfully reach the end points of the trial and demonstrate the user-friendliness of our meter.”

Diabetes sufferers worldwide are predicted to more than double to 366 million by the year 2030, making diabetes a global epidemic.
