Intra-aortic Balloon Pump for Counterpulsation

The device has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and has received the CE Mark.

Doctors may use counterpulsation for patients in cardiogenic shock, high-risk patients undergoing coronary angioplasty or stenting procedures, and patients undergoing coronary bypass surgery. Counterpulsation refers to inflation and deflation of an intra-aortic balloon synchronized with the heartbeat in a manner that provides a two-fold assist to the beating heart by increasing its oxygen supply while decreasing its oxygen demand. This intervention often restores the supply-and-demand balance necessary for the patient's recovery.

Operation of the new balloon pump is simple. The one-button startup provides fast initiation of therapy, particularly valuable in cardiac emergencies. Because the pump is fully automated, it frees up healthcare staff from unnecessary pump management, allowing more time for patient care. The pump employs a new, proprietary software program called IntelliSync(TM) designed to give patients more consistent therapy with greater continuity.

The CS100 pump was developed by the Cardiac Assist division of Datascope Corp. (Montvale, NJ, USA). The company believes that reliable automatic balloon pump technology, as embodied in the CS100, is the wave of the future. Datascope is a diversified medical device company.
