Needle-Guidance System for Ultrasound-Assisted Procedures

A new guidance system is designed to make procedures such as biopsies, cyst aspirations, and amniocentesis safer and more accurate. More...
The system was introduced at the conference of the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in Dallas (TX, USA) and showcased at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) in Chicago (IL, USA).

A precision needle guide called Amedic Pathfinder offers a dial-up needle selector, precision tracking, easy release and re-engagement, easy attachment to probes, and faster preparation time, while the steeper needle angle allows for a more-direct path. Included in the system is VivoSonic gel, a biocompatible and biodegradable gel specially formulated for diagnostic ultrasound that has no potential for incompatibility. The needles are coated with Echo-Coat, which traps thousands of microscopic air bubbles, acting as highly efficient reflectors of ultrasound waves. The entire needle is visible in the monitor at any angle. The new system is called Exact.

"The Exact system was designed with extensive clinical input, so it is not surprising that its clinical acceptance is quite high,” said Dennis Watts, vice president, marketing, at Microtek Medical Holdings, Inc. (Columbus, OH, USA), which developed the system. "The system offers improved safety, accuracy, ease of use, and cost effectiveness, which is why we expect it to become the new standard.”
