Water-Absorbent Wound and Burn Dressing

A new water-absorbent wound and burn dressing is based on hydrophilic polyurethane. More...
The dressing has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The dressing is called SpyroDerm, which means "breathable artificial skin.” In preclinical testing, SpyroDerm showed that it can absorb 500% of its own weight exudate. This is an improvement over other wound dressing products on the market, says the developer, CardioTech International, Inc. (Woburn, MA, USA). The company states this will be a big competitive advantage.

"With the rollout of this FDA-cleared technology, we begin the process of marketing our own products,” said Dr. Michael Szycher, CEO of Cardiotech. "This is an exciting transition for us.”

Dr. Szycher, an authority on polyurethane, helped to develop two other FDA-approved wound dressing products that are among the best-selling dressings on the market. CardioTech currently produces medical grade polyurethanes for use in implantable medical devices and manufactures medical devices on an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) basis for other companies. SpyroDerm will be the first product developed by the company to be also marketed by the company.
