Device Improves Repair of Mitral Valve

A new device improves the repair of the mitral valve, enabling surgeons to achieve more predictable remodeling of the valve annulus while maintaining normal physiology and flexibility, resulting in improved valve function.

Stephen B. Colvin and Dr. Aubrey C. Galloway, surgeons at New York University Medical Center (NY, USA), in collaboration with Medtronic, Inc. (Minneapolis, MN, USA). The semi-rigid radiopaque device is constructed of a strong but flexible metal alloy that holds the valve in the remodeled shape while eyelets facilitate suturing and secure anchoring. Surgeons are increasingly choosing repair instead of replacement, since repair requires a shorter hospital stay, requires less anticoagulant therapy, and has a success rate of 95-99%.

"The Future Band annuloplasty is a significant advance over prior devices used for valve repair,” said Dr.Galloway. "This should lead to more predictable long-term results after valve repair surgery.”
