Innovative Laser Switches Delivery Modes Electronically

A new integrated CO2 laser system addresses a broad range of clinical solutions for ear, nose and throat (ENT), gynecology, otology, and general surgery.

The system uses durable, efficient CO2 fiber transmission to an aiming beam for precision targeting in difficult-to-reach and contoured anatomy. Using advanced software, the laser delivers precision automated microsurgery with user-defined control over shaped cutting, ablation area, penetration depth, and unique power delivery modes.

Free beam laser energy is transmitted via a full range of fiber and free beam accessories, such as the proprietary digital AcuBlade scanning micromanipulator that enables virtually char-free margins for excellent tissue sampling, preservation of healthy surrounding tissue, and superior visibility. Additionally, three power modes, three timed-exposure modes, and the scanner itself give surgeons the freedom to customize beam delivery and control tissue effect for optimal balance between surgical precision and microvascular hemostasis. The AcuPulse DUO is a product of Lumenis (Yokneam, Israel).


“The AcuPulse Duo affords unparalleled ability to cater specific surgical treatment to a broad range of pathology in the performance of transoral head and neck procedures,” said associate professor Joshua Schindler, MD, of the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU, USA). “Coupling line-of-sight and fiber-based laser approaches allow the greatest surgical freedom in addressing lesions that are difficult to access and lets us to treat disease endoscopically that would otherwise mandate another approach.”

“The versatility of the AcuPulse DUO will allow surgeons to treat a broader range of patients,” said Prof. Marc Remacle, MD, PhD, of University Hospital of Mont-Godinne (Yvoir, Belgium). “With the combination of precision transoral laser microsurgery to treat tumors of the throat and larynx, and the flexibility of fiber-delivered laser energy to treat hard-to-reach anatomy, AcuPulse DUO will improve my ability to tailor treatment for each patient, help improve clinical outcomes and enhance patient safety.”
