New Metal Head for Hip Replacement Considerably Reduces Wear

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 26 Mar 2009
A new metal hip bearing significantly reduces cumulative wear and associated ion release compared to conventional metal-on-metal technology.

The aSphere M-Spec incorporates a precision contoured femoral head that already approximates the shaping that occurs during the in vivo run-in wear phase, and also provide optimized head-to-shell ratios, enhancing stability and long-term performance. More...
The advanced design incorporates a wear-resistance zone, so patients may experience an up to 80% decrease in cumulative metal wear debris and an associated 77% decrease in ion release. The aSphere head is also compatible with advanced femoral stems to provide surgeons greater flexibility, based on their preferred technique and the patient's anatomy. The aSphere head, combined with proprietary exclusive TrueGlide technology, which enhances performance with smooth, natural motion and less friction, facilitates a more fluid range of natural motion of up to 159 degrees. The aSphere M-Spec Femoral Head is a product of DePuy Orthopaedics (Warsaw, IN, USA), and is part of the Pinnacle Hip Solutions bearing system.

"DePuy Orthopaedics continues to advance bearing technology, design, materials and manufacturing to offer surgeons and their patients a diverse and broad portfolio that addresses their specific needs and preferences," said David Floyd, president of DePuy Orthopaedics. "The aSphere head is the latest example of our commitment to innovation that continues to optimize our premier high stability and low wear solutions."

TrueGlide technology is based on advanced tribology, which optimizes the diametrical clearance and surface finish of the implant, allowing the body to create a thin film of synovial fluid that enables bearing lubrication and reducing wear. The result is a smooth, more fluid range of natural motion and improved wear resistance.
