Sponge-Like Allograft Fills Bone Voids

By HospiMedica International staff writers

A demineralized bone allograft provides a natural scaffold that can be placed into a void within or on top of a vertebral spacer.

The Alphatec ProFUSE demineralized bone scaffold is a porous, malleable allograft that is derived entirely of human bone; this provides sponge-like compressive properties and shape memory qualities to the scaffold, which allows a surgeon to compress the ProFUSE and place it into a small space. Following placement, the product will expand to foster maximum contact between the spacer and the endplate of the vertebral body, in a way that is designed to promote fusion due to the natural osteoconductive construct and the osteoinductive potential that are ideal for rapid bony ingrowth.

The ProFUSE chips are a unique blend of cortical and cancellous particles that also provide excellent handling characteristics. ProFUSE comes prepackaged in a proprietary vacuum infusion packaging system (VIP), which allows for enhanced infusion of cells and bone marrow aspirate, designed to provide maximum healing potential. Alphatec ProFUSE demineralized bone is a product of Alphatec Spine (Carlsbad, CA, USA), and can be used with other Alphatec Spine orthobiologics products in the allograft product line, such as the Novel spinal spacer system and AlphaGRAFT structural allografts.

"Our ProFUSE demineralized bone scaffold and VIP packaging directly supports our strategy of expanding our product portfolio with innovative orthobiologics solutions. This launch compliments Alphatec Spine's product offering and affords a significant opportunity to participate in the $1.7 billion U.S. orthobiologics market,” said Dirk Kuyper, president and CEO of Alphatec Spine.
