Instant Digital X-Rays of Breast Cancer Specimens Speed Up Surgery

A British hospital has significantly sped up its breast cancer surgery with a digital radiography system that can x-ray tumors in the operating room, immediately after removal, and display the images within seconds. More...


The compact and safe Faxitron MX-20 digital radiography system consists of a shielded x-ray cabinet with a digital camera in its base that provides high-resolution electronic x-ray images of any tissue sample at up to five times radiographic magnification; its large field size (12 cm x 12 cm) makes it particularly popular with breast surgeons.

"The Faxitron allows us to instantly check that each breast cancer tumor is completely excised,” explained Dr. Tim Bucknall, consultant breast surgeon at The Queen's Hospital in Burton (Trent, UK). "The camera's variable depth of focus also makes it possible for us to look at the individual calcifications and arrangements of the ducts within the specimen, which is very important because subtle changes within certain calcified areas can indicate tumor and pre-cancerous conditions.”

The system was developed by Qados (Sandhurst, UK). "Previously, taking each specimen to the x-ray department and developing the film delayed the operation by up to 30 minutes, so we can now operate on approximately two more patients in a day,” Dr. Bucknall continued. "The Faxitron had been recommended by several of my colleagues and impressed us as the most reliable system available, it is simple to use and was easy and quick to install.”
