Screw System Corrects Spinal Deformities

A titanium and stainless steel screw and rod system has been designed to simplify the correction of spinal deformities and the treatment of degenerative disc disease.

The system includes screws designed with a polyaxial double-lead thread pattern, allowing surgeons to advance the screws twice as fast as standard screws; a single-set screw closure mechanism that minimizes the chances of cross-threading and significantly reduces head spreading; and a feature called Top-Notch that makes it easier for surgeons to attach instruments to the screw and improves visualization during surgery.

The system consists of several types of screws including monoaxial screws (4.35–8 mm), polyaxial screws (4.35–9 mm), large diameter polyaxial screws (10–11 mm), and uniplanar screws (4.35–7 mm), which offer the freedom of placement of a polyaxial screw while providing the correction capability of a monoaxial screw. It also includes open and closed hooks, multiple rod-to-rod connection options, and lateral connectors.

During posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) and transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF), surgeons can utilize an independent locking technology that allows surgeons to lock the heads of the polyaxial screws in any position without locking the entire construct. This allows the surgeon to maintain proper sagittal alignment during compression and distraction maneuvers in both kyphotic and lordotic curves of the spine.
