FDA Clears Desktop Computed Radiography System

A low-cost computed radiography (CR) system designed to expedite patient imaging for hospital departments, outpatients, surgical centers, and doctors' offices has been cleared by the U.S. More...
Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The CR system is the product of PhorMax Corp. (Palo Alto, CA, USA). The company states that the system is intended as a turnkey solution for enabling radiology centers to become filmless and benefit from the efficiencies of digital communications over computer networks and the Internet. The system, which combines the CR cassette and the CR scanner and imaging system with a quality control workstation, is well suited for small offices and medical centers.

The system employs a reusable phosphor-based imaging plate, contained in a cassette having the same external dimensions as conventional film-based x-ray cassettes. Requiring no refitting of existing equipment, the system offers instant acquisition of digital images and can easily connect to existing PACS and medical-imaging application service provider (ASP) systems.

"Considering the product's features, ease of functionality, and excellent price, the system has the potential to make direct, filmless 2-D radiographs affordable and widely accessible for general x-ray imaging at the point of care,” said Manuel Arreola, Ph.D., director of clinical medical physics at the University of Florida's Shands Hospital and principal investigator in PhorMax's clinical studies.
