CR Version of High-Flexion Knee

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 28 Dec 2003
A cruciate-retaining (CR) fixed bearing knee system provides a greater range of motion for patients who require deep bending for recreational or other reasons, offering a range of motion up to 155 degrees for patients who desire high flexion after a total knee replacement.

Called NexGen CR-Flex, the system is differentiated from other high-flexion systems in that there are new "minus” sized femoral components that give the surgeon an additional tool to balance the soft tissue ligaments without cutting additional bone. More...
Zimmer has applied for patent protection on this "minus size” femoral concept. NexGen CR-Flex, the product of Zimmer Holdings, Inc. (Warsaw, IN, USA), will enable surgeons who prefer a CR design to offer patients a high flex knee. Previously, Zimmer's LPS-Flex design addressed only the requirements of surgeons who prefer a cruciate sacrificing, or posterior-stabilized system.

"With a cruciate retaining design, a surgeon must be able to balance the tension on the ligaments and tendons that holds the knee in proper alignment,” said Dr. Kim Bertin, an orthopedic surgeon in Salt Lake City (UT, USA), who worked with Zimmer to develop this new design. "The NexGen CR-Flex allows the surgeons to achieve soft-tissue balancing without the need to make additional bone cuts or ligament releases.”
