New Tools for Identifying and Treating Breast Cancer

By HospiMedica staff writers
Posted on 21 Nov 2003
New tools for surgeons are intended to be an accurate guide for performing breast-conserving therapy or open biopsy and for accurately landmarking the sites.

One tool, called SkiPole, is a breast localization needle that remains securely in position due to the proprietary 3D anchoring basket that is deployed within the breast tissue. More...
Because the risk of migration is reduced, this tool enables surgeons to precisely remove the area of concern and thereby minimize excessive tissue removal and the need for a secondary procedure.

The second tool, called CorMark, gives surgeons a single collagen mark with a titanium clip that is placed after a core needle biopsy, using ultrasound, mammography, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), thereby offering a range of imaging options.
Both products were developed by Artemis Medical (Hayward, CA, USA).

"The CorMark can be clearly imaged under ultrasound after a core needle biopsy, allowing us to accurately mark the site of the biopsy. This is important in the event the diagnosis is a malignancy and neo-adjuvant therapy or surgery for removal of the mass is required,” said Dr. Ellen Mendelson, chief of breast imaging at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago (IL, USA).
