A total of 5,198 exhibitors participating in the MEDICA 2011 (Düsseldorf, Germany) International Trade Fair with Congress – World Forum for Medicine, and the concurrently held COMPAMED 2011, International Trade Fair – High-Tech Solutions for Medical Technology, presented an entire spectrum of new products, services, and processes for both inpatient and outpatient care to 134,500 visitors from 100 countries. A majority of the exhibitors (74%) came from nations other than Germany, including a record 403 companies from the United States. Other leading foreign exhibitor countries included Italy, Great Britain, France, and China. Two successful US pavilions hosting 182 companies presented their latest technologies. The range of products demonstrated that not only are manufacturers and users cooperating more strongly in product development, but that the networking of equipment is also increasing, through cross-device, single-source solutions, or by means of cooperation between different device manufacturers. In addition to intensified cooperation with other suppliers, medical device manufacturers are focusing on enhancing their service offers to secure their market position.

“The manufacturers of medical device technology, medical products, and medical IT have once again used MEDICA in Düsseldorf to impressively demonstrate their competence,” said Joachim Schäfer, managing director of Messe Düsseldorf. “Industry organizations reported an excellent mood amongst the exhibitors and good business, as a result of the high attendance of international and decision-making trade visitors.”

“In the aviation or automotive field, the leading trade shows are dominated by major corporations alone,” commented US assistant secretary of commerce Suresh Kumar, who visited MEDICA. “By contrast, MEDICA is a business platform for thousands of small and medium-sized companies. The deals concluded here create new jobs immediately.”

COMPAMED, hosting 627 of the exhibitors, once again confirmed its position as a leading international event for medical manufacturing supplies. Now products presented included materials, mechanical and electronic components, packaging, quality testing, and contract manufacturing. COMPAMED 2011 also featured a US pavilion organized by Messe Düsseldorf North America (MDNA; Chicago, IL, USA) with products presented by nine exhibitors.

Two forums complemented the exhibits; the association for microtechnology, nanotechnology, and new materials (IVAM) forum focused on the application spectrum of microsystem technology and nanotechnologies. Additionally, the new COMPAMED suppliers forum, organized by the trade magazine DeviceMed, presented trends from the entire process chain for the development of medical products. Next year’s MEDICA show will be held from November 14-17, 2012, again held concomitantly with COMPAMED 2012, in Düsseldorf (Germany).
