(El Segundo, CA, USA has agreed to acquire Gambro Healthcare (Stockholm, Sweden) for around U.S.$3.05 billion in cash. Gambro Healthcare is a business unit of Gambro AB. Both Gambro and DaVita are providers of dialysis services for patients suffering from chronic kidney failure.

DaVita will also enter into a 10-year supply agreement with Gambro Renal Products, another business unit of Gambro AB, to provide a majority of its hemodialysis products and equipment requirements. The acquisition of Gambro Healthcare will increase the number of U.S. patients served by DaVita by about 43,000 patients, almost doubling DaVita's patient load, currently around 53,000 patients. After the transaction is completed, DaVita predicts combined revenues of about $4.4 billion.

"As a combined entity, we will be able to more effectively offer chronic kidney disease services and technologies in a cost-efficient manner,” noted Kent Thiry, chairman and CEO of DaVita. "Our patients will benefit from the broader array of products and services available.”
