Posted on 15 Jan 2001
Expanding its business into the peripheral stent market, Sulzer Medica (Winterthur, Switzerland) has agreed to acquire IntraTherapeutics, Inc. More...
(St. Paul, MN, USA) for US$145 million. IntraTherapeutics designs, manufactures, and markets peripheral stents. The move will enable Sulzer to further capitalize on the trend toward less-invasive treatments of cardiac and vascular diseases.

The product line of IntraTherapeutics includes balloon-expandable noncoil stents and self-expandable coil and noncoil stents. The company, which will remain a stand-alone entity, has a strong research and development pipeline and is in the process of introducing new products. IntraTherapeutics has sales in about 90 countries. Following the acquisition, the company will be able to benefit from the distribution network of Sulzer Medica.

"Entering the peripheral stent market is an important step in our strategy to expand our core activities and, in particular, to further strengthen our highly profitable cardiovascular business,” said Andre P. Buchel, CEO of Sulzer Medica.
