Hospira will be the name of the new independent global hospital products company to be launched in the first half of 2004 by Abbott Laboratories (Abbott Park, IL, USA).

Hospira will be a specialty pharmaceutical and medication delivery company. More...
Its products will include infusion therapy and critical care products, medication management systems such as electronic pumps, and specialty injectable drugs, including generic acute-care injectables and intensive care drugs. The company will be the hospital products division of Abbott, with around U.S.$2.5 billion in sales and more than 14,000 employees worldwide. The name "Hospira” is derived from the words "hospital, spirit, inspire” and the Latin word "spero,” which means hope. It was selected by new company employees through a global, intranet-based voting system.

"We are confident Hospira will live up to the qualities embodied in its name. Based on research with key stakeholders, including customers, we know that Hospira is a name that is easily understood, and expresses a tone that is humanistic, confident, and inspirational,” said Christopher B. Begley, currently senior vice president, hospital products, who has been named chief executive officer of Hospira.
